they’re characters with defined personality traits and no humanity, and while their effect on the doctor is very visible and they induce some excellent and wonderful character development in the doctor

they don’t do anything

they are completely independent from their effect, and you never see them exhibit any sort of personality that might cause changes in the doctor. they’re just varying degrees of there.

rose tyler was excited about everything the doctor baited her with. she invoked fun, security. donna noble was spitfire, angry and energetic and inquisitive, and she was so normal and down-to-earth and took everything at face value, she was the doctor’s human, a pocket of humanity, and you could see it anything she did

what did the ponds do. what the hell did the ponds to to invoke the doctor’s personal changes. their effect is visible, but it’s vague, because they don’t do anything, they just have their singular personality traits and you can barely guess at their arc.

river song, too! we learn WHY she’s so batshit and independent in let’s kill hitler, but she induces fully fleshed character development in the doctor and it does not respond to her personality in any way!! it’s like these characters are holding doctor development remote controls!! they are about as instrumental to the doctor’s reactions as Miss Kizlet and her remote in The Bells of Saint John!!! The third instalment in a BBC Sherlock fanfiction about John Watson being reduced to an 8-year-old and transported to the night of Sherlock and John’s first case.

It’s absolutely massive and is lovely and does a fantastic job of addressing PTSD and trigger episodes and the complications of the characters, especially Sherlock and Mycroft (!!!). The fic mostly circles around John’s world, not the series’ world, because they’re obviously different! And we get wicked character fleshing and development with the canon characters, and wicked character fleshing and development for the characters little John meets, and it’s just so damn solid.

It is inteeeeeense and it updates every Wednesday.

The fic starts with Wee Doctor, and the series is all up on AO3. ;9
