Oh boy another one
I’ve been hearing a lot about how awful it is people shove PC mindsets down their throat and how easily offended sites like Tumblr are. Like you have to walk on eggshells when approaching delicate topics. It’s a minefield, they say, and it’s best to avoid it.
This is intentional. This is something called Social Conditioning.
I first saw this in action on communities like SF_Drama and unfunnybusiness. Unfunnybusiness did it right, SF_Drama is the horrible rotten womb of all SJW evils.
The general idea is to punish people for saying something that isn’t politically correct. The most common tactic is to strictly correct them (this was the case in Unfunnybusiness). Every single time they say something, do not even respond to their point. Correct them. They said something bad. You have to correct them so they understand and are concious of that word. People are insecure, they’ll start to change themselves to fit in with the community. This is conditioning an individual.
It goes deeper with the degree of offense. Rape jokes and death wishes are the type of bad comments that are completely shut the hell down by every single person in the community. Don’t do that, that’s horrible, how could you even THINK about saying that. That horrible comment leaves a lasting smear on their reputation in the community. This is actually conditioning other people in the community rather than the person being shut down; if you say something like this, everyone will hate you. It is the bread and meat of the social makeup.
Social conditioning works for the most basic of issues. You can’t just order someone to stop using an offensive word IRL. You have to condition the social climate to think it’s bad. I cringed with all the contact embarassment in the world when I saw those “don’t use ‘gay’ negatively” commercials, because I know for a fact that’s not going to work, and the girls will laugh about her as soon as she leaves. Remember, every person is the hero of their own story, and they swallow being mistaken better than being wrong.
So what counts for IRL social conditioning? Well, if the phrase “hip with the cool kids” says anything, it’s language. “Who even uses ‘gay’ anymore, this isn’t the 00s”. ”Why is femininity bad?” “How does a girl hit a baseball, then?” The main issue with shutting down socially accepted horrors is making them assume it’s not socially acceptable. Instead of arguing or complaining the point, just be very accepting of it, and don’t say anything unless it is worth thinking about. You should be able to roll the conversation, and if the person is still too stupid to accept it and you’re out of smart fodder, just act like they are beneath your heel and pass it off.
This is the best way to guide social justice.
Social Justice Warriors tend to wreck it.
There’s this thing in America called the Zero Tolerance Policy. In it, people are punished with expulsion and police forces for the most tiny of crimes. In North America in general, petty thiefs are housed with people who had done assault and murder. Jail is famous for being a harsh climate where it’s dog eat dog.
Who the fuck thought it would be a good idea to house petty criminals in with a perfectly distilled social climate of absolute self-interest and distrust?
It just doesn’t work. America has the highest prison budget and prisoner count in the entire goddamn world, and the rates of the crimes re-occuring are much higher than in places where criminals are treated to a quiet, pleasant, wholesome experience full of baking and hiking and psychological evaluations.
By using zero-tolerance in schools, it destroys a child’s sense of perspective and generates distrust in them. It doesn’t work. If you think about your own existence and how you feel about people yelling at you, you would know it doesn’t work. It’s stupid and only makes things worse.
Back to social justice. Social Justice Warriors also have an issue of Zero Tolerance. They’re trying to do the climate conditioning, except anyone who makes a mistake is the devil hail satan 666 and should be taken out back and shot. Anyone who disagrees about the racist or sexist implications of something is racist or sexist.
It does actually work. I learned about it on SF_Drama with the dogpile-to-teach-others-a-lesson technique, because that is the only technique SJWs seem to know. I learned how bad these things are, and that people should be shut down as soon as they say anything like it!
Except, uh, I didn’t know why. That’s the main issue. When you’re calmly explaining something, a discussion can be held. Usually a person making a minor offense is only ignorant, and they are genuinely interested in why things are the way they are. For example; a person once asked “why are rape jokes not in the same league as murder jokes?” Normally this would be shut down, but I spared a moment to google it myself. Nothing. Nada. Not a single result, just an outporing of “I HATE RAPE JOKES”. It took me forever to find a really good article on what exactly seperates it from normal black humour.
And that’s just the issue. In zero-tolerance conditioning, no one learns. When SJWs explain their point of view, it’s an attack that is so horribly vague just for the sake of being the hero of POC and LGBTQA everywhere. They’re not. They’re screaming and it either conditions the viewers to figure that the right way to be a social justice ally is to scream at people or makes people defensive of their beliefs and distrustful of any kind of politicial correctness.
Both are wrong. Both are only making things worse.
Social justice should not be violent, it doesn’t need warrior-heroes. It should be something that needs to be calmly addressed and measured. It is a social situation; if you’re getting in an arguement about an important topic, you need to spend a large amount of time considering how the other party will take your rebuttals and the side effects of that or else everything will go to shit.
IN SUMMARY. (I can’t believe I had to add a summary.)
When calling people on their shit, please use a sense of perspective. Be conscious about how violent behavior will affect someone. Do not go on raging hate-benders for the sake of social justice and nothing else.
Also, ask yourself why is something racist, sexist, bigoted? Even without people to argue with, a lot of people are eager to sling -ist at anything that moves. Don’t. It is counter-productive and minimizes actual offenses.
